I bought a drill press attachment mortiser years ago and I have avoided using it much because I have a drill press table attached already and the mortiser takes your drill press out of action when you are using the attachment. So, I bought a "free standing" mortiser instead. I had never used one of these so I did not know what to look for. I bought the cheapest. The fence was bad and the hold down did not work so I returned it. This time I shopped carefully and decided on the Shop Fox Heavy Duty. The extra power (3/4 horse)and the double post and the 1/2 inch chuck helped me decide. I had a place where I could examine some other brands before I made my choice. I am very satisfied with the Shop Fox. Very heavy duty. The fence and hold down (maybe the most important part of the mortiser) both are heavy duty and work great ,,,except for one thing. My very first project was using 1 inch X 2 inch material. The hold down is attached to a very heavy duty ,removable post coming out of the fence. The removable post comes in 3 lengths so you can work on very large or smaller material. My small material was too short for the shortest post. The Drill head hits the post as you press it into the wood (wouldn't do this with wider material, with the fence moved back). I have solved that problem by making a post (using a bolt) which is shorter than the shortest one from the factory. Works great. This will be a problem with almost any mortiser I have seen (using small material). The bit will now drill into the base for a through mortise. I read reviews about Shop Fox which talked about shipping problems (breakage). I can see how this could happen because the machine is very heavy. You will want to mount it permanently some place. I use a small table which I can scoot out of the way when not in use.(Be careful, top heavy). I also bought the Shop Fox chisel drills and they seem high quality too. Machine comes with one 1/2 inch bit. Very clear instructions for assembly. I hear Shop Fox is handled by Grizzley, a very good tool company. I noticed the Grizzley machine post is a single. Seems like the double would be more stable but I will never know because this machine will last me and my sons forever. PS I see a lot of negative comments about how hard it is to set the mortiser chisel parallel with the material. I am not sure if I saw this in the Shop Fox directions, but what I do is place a tall board against the fence and move the fence forward to just touch the chisel. Make the chisel parallel to the tall board and tighten the chuck . You are now straight with your cuts. PPS The main post on the Shop Fox is adjustable so you can set the drill head square with the base and fence (also so you can do "off base" mortising for really long material). Update to original order! I received the first order a day late and damaged...UPS. The machine is quite heavy and needs to be handled carefully because of the packaging and UPS is not aware of this when tossed around. I was not going to reorder this mortising machine except that the reviews on the machine itself were very good (when not damaged)so I called Amazon and talked to a very nice Rep. named Shirley that was so helpful in resolving the problem that I placed the order again. This review is to give 5 stars for Amazon customer support. I will update later on the machine if it arrives in good shape and spend some time testing it out.
